Harvesting and processing vanilla beans are time-consuming because, in Bali, Vanilla beans are grown in tropical regions, where year-round warm temperatures and sufficient rainfall create soil conditions and climate that are suitable for proper growth. Vanilla Beans, however, are the most sensitive since they are derived from a delicate flour. The vanilla orchid can be up to 3 years old before it begins to grow the delicate orchid that ultimately becomes a vanilla bean. The pods themselves require an additional 8-9 months of growth before they can be harvested. Every vanilla flower is pollinated by hand. After being harvested, the green pods are heated in warm water, fermented, frequently massaged during the drying process and finally sorted.
